NCAA Football Odds - Big Ten Power Iowa vs Eastern Illinois
Saturday, September 04, 2010
by BetUS.com
The Iowa Hawkeyes will open the 2010 season as favorites to finish near the top of the Big Ten in the college football odds, and a tune-up game awaits on Saturday against Eastern Illinois at Kinnick Stadium to ring in the year as one of the most excited Hawkeye fan bases in recent memory will attend.
Iowa is led by quarterback Ricky Stanzi along with an experienced wide receiver and running back collection and a strong defense with playmakers like potential All-Americans Tyler Sash at S and Adrian Clayborn at defensive end. Iowa has won 15 of their last 17 games overall and is back in the title picture for the Big Ten and perhaps nationally after beating Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl last year.

But can they decisively beat Eastern Illinois and cover the college football game odds to get strong momentum going into the season?

The Panthers are a surprisingly dangerous team as they have four wins over FBS teams from the MAC Conference in ten years and have been to the playoffs seven times in that same span. Iowa's players are aware of the threat according to recent quotes and seem to realize that they could be in for a dogfight on Saturday.
Iowa needed a pair of blocked field goals to beat a similar-caliber team in Northern Iowa last year, although UNI has the in-state rivalry factor going for them and also caught Iowa by surprise.
The Hawkeyes won't be caught by surprise in this one despite the huge college football odds. Iowa has lots of playmakers for a team that is usually known as being merely a grind-it-out team that only wins close games.
Marvin McNutt at wide receiver along with Darrell Johnson-Koulianos can put up points in a hurry and give Iowa the explosive receiving corps they haven't had in a while. Iowa can cover the college football odds if they get some big plays from the defense and Adrian Clayborn and Tyler Sash are just the guys to do it along with LB Jeremiah Hunter.
With the scare from last year behind them and filed away as a lesson in their minds, Iowa should be able to roll Eastern Illinois in this game behind Ricky Stanzi and their stout, opportunistic defense.
